Next Best Thing

Next Best Thing. Comedy-drama, 108 minutes; starring Madonna, Rupert Everett, Illeana Douglas. Directed by John Schlesinger.

The film is about two best friends, Abbie (Madonna) and Robert (Everett), who have many things in common; intelligence, quick wit, unconventional approach to life, and no luck in love. The two could have been the perfect couple, if only Robert was not gay.

One day they decide to have a child together, and then five years later Abbie falls in love with a straight man. A child custody battle ensues.

Most critics were not impressed by the film, which is directed by Academy Award winner Schlesinger, due to its cliche-ridden script and awkward acting by Madonna.

However, some enjoyed the performance by Everett, who returns as a gay man after being nominated for an award for a similar character in My Best Friend's Wedding with Julia Roberts. (08)
