Newmont manager defies summons

JAKARTA: Police postponed on Monday the questioning of PT Newmont Minahasa Raya external relations manager David Sompie as a suspect in the alleged contamination of Buyat Bay, North Sulawesi.

The company's lawyer, Palmer Situmorang, told the police his client was mourning the death of his mother-in-law.

"We have only delayed David's questioning for a week despite his lawyer's request for a three-week delay. We will check whether the news is true," a police investigator said.

The company said in a press release that David had arrived in Jakarta but had to rush back to the North Sulawesi capital of Manado for the burial of his mother-in-law, who died early Monday. -- JP
