Newborn found dead at cemetery

JAKARTA (JP): A one-day-old newborn was found dead in a public cemetery in Mekarsari village in Bekasi on Saturday, raising the toll of dumped newborns to six this year.

The baby boy, wrapped in white cloth and put in a plastic bag, was found by one of the graveyard keepers at around 8 a.m., First Sgt. S. Purwadi of the Bekasi police precinct said.

Purwadi said that the dumped baby was believed to be the unwanted result of an illicit love affair.

"The baby was healthy and very handsome so it's very possible that his parents just don't want him so they abandoned him there," he said, adding there were no signs of defects on the baby which might have initiated his dead.

For further detailed information, however, he said would only come after the forensic examination.

The baby was sent to the Cipto Mangunkusumo General Hospital for a postmortem examination.

Earlier this month, two newborns, a boy and a girl, estimated to be a day old, were also found dead on the same day in separate incidents, respectively in front of a Chinese prayer house in West Jakarta and near a traditional market in Central Jakarta. (emf)
