Newborn baby found in hospital toilet

JAKARTA (JP): Staffers at the Medical Rehabilitation Installation of the Cipto Mangunkusumo General Hospital were surprised to find a newborn baby alive in a third floor toilet on Thursday.

The premature baby girl, weighing 1.3 kilograms, was rushed to the hospital's emergency room for intensive care.

Hasanah, a staffer at the hospital, said she was using the toilet at about 11 a.m. when she heard the weak crying of a baby from a cubicle next to her.

Hasanah then called to the baby's mother, "Ibu (Mom), what is happening with your daughter?"

"As I didn't hear an answer, I became worried and left the toilet for help," Hasanah said.

Several people then rushed to the toilet to see what was happening.

Indah, an employee in the finance department, said the newborn baby was laid precisely on the cubicle by her mother.

"Her legs were on the hole of the cubicle, while her head faced up," she told reporters at the hospital.

Doctor Wanarini rushed the newborn to the emergency room.

"The baby is in good health, despite being premature," the doctor said.

None of the staffers at the building could identify the mother. (asa)
