New tools for measuring ozone

PADANG, West Sumatra: The agency for meteorology and geophysics has installed sophisticated equipment for monitoring global atmosphere in Agam regency.

The station called Global Atmosphere Watch which opened over the weekend is the first in Indonesia and the sixth in the world after Algiers, Argentina, Brazil, China and Kenya.

Agency chief Rear Marshall Sri Diharto said the new system integrates the background air pollution monitoring network and the global ozone observation system with other systems.

The station provided by the World Meteorology Organization will monitor the condition of the ozone layer, chemical composition of rain, aerosol level, solar radiation and climatology.

The World Meteorology Organization contributed US$330,000 of the total US$1.1 million needed to build the station, Diharto said. (32)
