New technology to process trash

TANGERANG: A joint American-European investor group represented by PT Kusuma has offered the Tangerang administration a sophisticated technology to process garbage into useful products such as cement raw materials, electricity and pure water.

According to Mirza Sukri, director of PT Kusuma, a local private company appointed by the foreign investors to operate the project should the administration accept, the company could recycle some 950 tons of garbage daily from Tangerang and turn it into ash that was good for cement manufacture and road asphalt as well as, electrical power and pure water.

However, Sukri declined to elaborate on the details of the electricity power and pure water during his presentation before the Bappeda officials in Tigaraksa last Thursday.

This technology requires plenty of water and therefore such a project must be located near a beach, he said, adding that such technology would be the first of its kind in the country.

He said that to recycle garbage into the useful products, the company would provide three kinds of machines that could recycle 300 tons, 500 tons and 950 tons of garbage daily.

According to him, such technology had been applied in Japan, Italy and Germany.

However, The Tangerang Development Planning Board (Bappeda) chief Suryana said that the administration needed to conduct a feasibility study on the recycling technology before deciding to accept it.--JP
