New summons for officers

JAKARTA: The Commission of Inquiry into Human Rights Violations (KPP HAM) will request the Central Jakarta District Court on Monday to summons three military officers for questioning in connection to the Trisakti, Semanggi I and Semanggi II shootings.

"We have prepared all necessary documentation, which is to be handed over to the Central Jakarta District Court on Monday," KPP HAM chief Albert Hasibuan said on Friday.

The two of the three officers were identified as Lt. Col. Nachrowi and Lt. Col. Priyatno. They have been summoned twice by KPP HAM, which is probing the 1998 and 1999 killings, but both summonses were rejected.

Military and police officers had refused to turn up for questioning, claiming that a House of Representatives inquiry team had issued a recommendation that the case be heard by a military court.

"The House inquiry team has nothing to do with Law No. 26/2000 on human rights tribunals. We have full authority to question these officers," Albert said. -- JP
