New submarine cable installed

JAKARTA (JP): The NEC Corporation of Japan has completed construction of an optical fiber submarine cable system spanning 400 kilometers between Kalimantan and the Belitung Islands, South Sumatra, the company announced yesterday.

The company said the submarine cable system, equipped with four fiber pairs, operates at 2.5 gigabits per second (Gbit/s).

It said that one fiber pair with transmission would be initially used, with a transmission capacity equal to 32,000 telephone lines.

When the remaining three fiber pairs are used, the capacity would be 128,000 telephone lines, it said, adding that the system, which links Tanjungpandan and Pontianak, is the world's longest unrepeated submarine cable. (hen)
