New submarine cable installed

JAKARTA (JP): The NEC Corporation of Japan has completed
construction of an optical fiber submarine cable system spanning
400 kilometers between Kalimantan and the Belitung Islands, South
Sumatra, the company announced yesterday.

The company said the submarine cable system, equipped with
four fiber pairs, operates at 2.5 gigabits per second (Gbit/s).

It said that one fiber pair with transmission would be
initially used, with a transmission capacity equal to 32,000
telephone lines.

When the remaining three fiber pairs are used, the capacity
would be 128,000 telephone lines, it said, adding that the
system, which links Tanjungpandan and Pontianak, is the world's
longest unrepeated submarine cable. (hen)
