New market in Depok

JAKARTA (JP): The construction of a new market in Depok, 30 kilometers from here, is aimed primarily at accommodating small- scale traders and sidewalk vendors trading in the ever growing township, prominent businessman Probosutedjo said.

"The market was built to relocate vendors trading in a makeshift market to a permanent one which is clean and orderly and equipped with adequate facilities," Probosutedjo said at the marketplace on Monday evening.

The construction of the market was fully financed by Probosutedjo.

Probosutedjo said the construction of the market, which has 536 kiosks, is also meant to help prevent small-scale traders and sidewalk vendors operating in and around the makeshift market from being swept off the streets by the authorities.

He said when all the kiosks are occupied there will be no more vendors trading outside the market.

Depok Mayor Sofyan Hamim urged the traders who will soon occupy the stalls in the new market to help maintain cleanliness and orderliness in and around the market place.

"To keep the market clean is the duty of all the vendors. This is important in order that shoppers will feel comfortable visiting the market," Sofyan said as reported by Antara.

Prices of the new kiosks range from Rp 8 million to Rp 16,500,000 each. (bas)
