The deputy to Jakarta police chief, Brig. Gen. Gunawan, yesterday installed Lt. Col. Arie Subowo (right), 44, as the new head of Jakarta Seaport Police, replacing Lt. Col. Timbul Sianturi (second right).

Arie's latest position was head of Bandung detectives in West Java.

After graduating from the Police Academy in 1975, he was appointed head of East Timor police precinct for two years. He was then assigned as a senior police intelligence officer in West Jakarta until he joined the Police College and graduated in 1985.

After leaving the college, Arie, a father of two, was appointed as head of police operational affairs and detectives in Balikpapan, East Kalimantan.

He then joined the School for Senior Officers and graduated in 1992. Before his post in Bandung, he was a staffer at the Armed Forces Headquarters and, later, head of the National Police's narcotics unit.

In his speech read by Gunawan, Jakarta Police Chief Maj. Gen. Hamami Nata instructed the newly-appointed officer to continue his predecessor's efforts to arrest container thieves in the port.

Timbul Sianturi has been appointed as head of South Kalimantan police intelligence. (bsr)
