Neglected buildings in Surakarta

From Merdeka

The city of Surakarta in Central Java has thousands of ancient buildings which are both artistic and historical. Unfortunately, many of them are in a highly neglected state.

The city does not seem to care for its historical buildings. It has modified many of the ancient buildings into shopping centers, offices, plazas and recreational places. The remaining buildings are in disrepair and without any visible effort at improvement and conservation. This condition is not supportive of education.

Surakarta's administration has not even begun to come to grips with the problem, not realizing that the ancient buildings need to be preserved as a cultural heritage. Besides, they have touristic potential. It would be a pity if these edifices became extinct, swallowed by the progress of time.
