National Police deputy chief post revived
The Jakarta Post, Jakarta
The National Police Headquarters revived on Monday the position of national police deputy chief and appointed Comr. Gen. Kadaryanto to the second top post.
The revival of the post and the promotion of Kadaryanto, current deputy of police human resources, was made under a decree dated Oct. 21, 2002 and signed by National Police chief Gen. Da'i Bachtiar.
The post of the deputy chief had been reactivated early in 2001 by then president Abdurrahman "Gus Dur" Wahid, who named Comr. Gen. Chaeruddin Ismail to the position.
However, in August, the post of deputy police chief was scrapped by Gus Dur's successor Megawati Soekarnoputri.
The post remained dormant until its revival again on Monday and it was not clear what encouraged the move, announced by National Police spokesman Insp. Gen. Saleh Saaf.
The general told journalists on Monday that Decree No. SKEP/827/IX/2002 also recommended a reshuffle of 30 high-and middle-ranking police officers.
Saleh himself will be replaced by the current South Kalimantan Police chief Brig. Gen. Basyir Ahmad Barwawi as the police spokesman. Saleh will serve as chief of police telecommunications and information.
The reshuffle also included the appointment of Comr. Gen. Binarto and Insp. Gen. Engkesman Hillep as general inspector and the chief of police expert staff respectively.
Under the decision, West Java Police chief Insp. Gen. Sudirman Ail would serve as operations deputy to the police chief, and Insp. Gen. Tjuk Sugiarso, current head of the police leadership education and training school, as deputy of human resources.
Central Java Police chief Insp. Gen. Erwin Mappaseng was appointed as criminal detective chief and his deputy will be Papua Police chief Insp. Gen. Made Mangku Pastika.
East Kalimantan Police chief Insp. Gen. Sylvanus Wenas was named as chief of the elite Mobile Brigade (Brimob).
