National library's closed system

From Kompas

Referring to the complaint published April 13 in Kompas titled National Library from Anang R. Noer, Tangerang, we think it necessary to add implicit information to keep suggestions and criticism in the proper proportion and to prevent the public from obtaining a mistaken view of the National Library's operations.

It would be common sense for first time visitors to any place (departments, libraries, countries) to be careful in giving rash comments. People should first understand the regulations and system of a place before they criticize.

Lacking the above, Mr. Anang R. Noer misunderstood the entrance sign which reads: "Those allowed to enter, read etc...."

The National Library applies a closed-access system, it is not an open-access system. In other words, people have no access to books on the shelves. They must be helped by the librarian or an assistant. Regulations are found everywhere, not only at ours, but, especially so at international libraries.

Those who cannot show an ID card or student card cannot be served.

As to raising the reading habits of the public, branches of the National Library in the provinces, known as regional libraries, have increased their services with mobile libraries.
