Nabil wants minimum term

PAKANBARU, Riau: State Minister for the Environment Nabil Makarim is seeking to include a minimum punishment for perpetrators of illegal logging in the planned government regulation in lieu of law, which is to introduce a maximum death sentence.

Nabil said he had proposed a minimum sentence for illegal logging for inclusion in the regulation to the Minister of Forestry Mohamad Prakosa. According to Nabil, the regulation will be issued within two weeks.

He did not outline the appropriate minimum punishment for illegal loggers, who have been blamed for the frequent droughts, deadly landslides and flash floods that have plagued the country. -- Antara
