Nabbed man wanted for another crime

TANGERANG: The Tangerang police arrested on Monday a man in Dumpit village, in the Jatiuwung district of Tangerang municipality, for possession of a homemade gun and 5 bullets. The police also seized seven stolen motorcycles from the suspect, and established the suspect's connection to a separate crime.

Tangerang police detective chief Adj. Comr. Kustanto said that the suspect was identified as Dedy bin Abdulrahman, 21, a resident of Nagarasaka village, Baturaja regency, South Sumatra.

Kustanto said that Dedy, who was arrested at a relative's house following a tip from community members, was in fact one of the suspects wanted in connection with the shooting of H. Jaya, the victim of an armed motorcycle theft in Pasir Randu village, Curug, Tangerang, on Feb. 3, 2002.

"I shot him (H. Jaya) because he resisted our order to surrender his motorcycle," said Dedy.

The suspect claimed that he committed motorcycle thefts along with a partner called Zaenal. Zaenal is still at large.

One of seven motorcycles seized from the suspect was identified as belonging to H. Jaya, who was shot in the stomach, but survived.

Dedy and his partner usually followed their targeted victims until they passed through a quiet area, where they would stop the motorcyclist and steal their vehicle. They shot the victims upon any signs of resistance.

Dedy said he had bought the gun and bullets for Rp 1 million from a friend. -- JP
