Must Know! Protect Your Turbo Engine as Fuel Prices Surge

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - PT Pertamina (Persero) has once again adjusted the prices of non-subsidised fuels, effective from 4 May 2026.

One of the products experiencing an increase is Pertamax Turbo, rising from Rp 19,400 to Rp 19,900 per litre.

Unlike conventional engines, turbo engines operate under higher pressure and temperature conditions.

This makes them more sensitive to the quality of fuel used.

A lecturer from Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), Jayan Sentanuhady, stressed that fuel use in turbo engines cannot be arbitrary.

“Turbo engines are more sensitive, so it is best to continue using fuel according to the manufacturer’s recommendations,” Jayan told Kompas.com on Monday (4/5/2026).

He explained that using fuel with an inappropriate octane rating can trigger issues in the combustion process within the engine.

“Because they operate at high pressure and temperature, turbo engines are prone to knocking if the fuel’s octane is not suitable,” he said.

In the short term, this condition can reduce performance and prevent optimal power output.

However, if left unaddressed, knocking can also damage engine components, such as pistons and cylinder walls, ultimately affecting the engine’s lifespan.

Even though fuel prices are being adjusted, owners of turbo-engined vehicles are still advised to follow the fuel specifications recommended by the manufacturer.

In addition to maintaining performance, this step is also important to avoid the risk of long-term engine damage.
