Muslim students congress opens

YOGYAKARTA: The Indonesian Muslim Students Action Front (KAMMI) opened its second congress on Sunday at Wisma LPP Demangan here.

The congress, is being participated in by some 250 KAMMI activists from throughout the country.

The five-day congress is scheduled to discuss KAMMI's major agendas including changes to the organization's statutes and guidelines (GBHO) and election mechanisms for the executive board members.

The congress is also expected to produce recommendations regarding the current development of the country's social, political, and economic affairs.

Outgoing KAMMI chairman Fitra Arsil said in his opening speech that KAMMI should redefine its position.

"Redefining our position is important because we need to apply the essence of Islamic teaching which is to build (good) relations with Allah the Almighty and other human beings," Arsil said.

The organization currently claims to have some 30,000 members all over the country with regional branches in 30 cities, not including overseas branches. (swa)
