Municipality gears up for floods

JAKARTA: The Central Jakarta municipality has made
preparations to assist residents of 10 flood-prone areas during
this year's rainy season.

Central Jakarta Mayor Muhayat said on Wednesday his
administration had prepared temporary shelters, public kitchens
and rubber boats to help flood victims trapped in their houses.

The subdistricts in Central Jakarta most at risk of flooding
are Jati Pinggir, Pejompongan, Kali Pasir, Serdang, Matraman
Dalam, Karang Anyer, Gunung Sahari, Cempaka Putih, Duri Pulo and
Kebon Kacang.

He said his administration and relevant agencies were also
dredging rivers, repairing drains, preparing portable water pumps
and monitoring the condition of floodgates in an effort to
prevent flooding.

The Central Jakarta administration will also hold a drill in
Jati Pinggir subdistrict, which is historically badly affected by
