Muhammadiyah to deploy monitors

JAKARTA: The Muhammadiyah Youth organization says it will dispatch approximately 60,000 polling station monitors nationwide in the upcoming July 5 presidential election.

By dispatching so many monitors, it likely meant that the group was serious in its support of Amien Rais, according to Abdul Mukti, the chairman of the youth group, which is affiliated to Muhammadiyah, the second largest Muslim organization in the country.

Amien Rais is a former chairman of Muhammadiyah.

Abdul said that the deployment of the Muhammadiyah Youth members was aimed at preventing fraud, which may not only hurt Amien's chances, but also that of other candidates. -- Antara
