Mubyarto gets Hatta award

PADANG, West Sumatra: Senior economist Mubyarto on Friday became the first recipient of the Bung Hatta for his dedication in the economic and education fields.

The award was presented in a ceremony here at Bung Hatta University.

The award, named after Indonesia's first vice president Muhammad Hatta, was issued in commemoration of the university's 20th anniversary.

Hatta was also renowned for his economic theories, which focused on a people-oriented economy, and the establishment of cooperatives.

In his acceptance address, Mubyarto defended Hatta's concepts.

Mubyarto contended that these concepts were formulated within the context of the independence struggle to fight capitalism, liberalism and imperialism. (28)
