Move time one hour ahead!

I read with amusement your July 14 article Night shift workers complain over cutbacks in TV hours. The motivation for the new government regulation, it seems, is to cut down on energy consumption.

Is the government kidding? How many people watch TV at these hours? How much energy can be saved by cutting transmission from 1 a.m. to 5 a.m.?

A better way to conserve energy will be to move the entire country one hour ahead. For example, the sunrise and sunset times for Jakarta are around 5 a.m. and 6 p.m. respectively. If we move our time one hour ahead, the sunrise and sunset times would be 6 a.m. and 7 p.m. This would cut energy consumption in the evenings by one hour.

Singapore and Malaysia moved their time one hour ahead and have never looked back. By moving an hour ahead, it will also be easier to do business with Japan, China, Singapore/Malaysia, and other east Asian economies.
