Motorbike thief killed by mob

JAKARTA (JP): A mob of local residents from Pondok Benda Baru in Pamulang district, Tangerang, killed a man on Wednesday night for stabbing an ojek (motorcycle taxi) driver and attempting to steal his vehicle.

Local residents seized the thief as soon as they heard ojek driver Supriyadi's calls for help.

Supriyadi was taken unconscious to Fatmawati Hospital in South Jakarta.

Supriyadi, 25, a resident of Kedaung Hijau village in Pamulang district, South Jakarta, said from his bed yesterday that Juhana bin Mansyur, 24, asked him for a lift at about 9 p.m.

"Passing through Pondok Benda Baru, he suddenly asked for my motorcycle. I tried to resist, but he stabbed me.

"I shouted 'Thief! Thief!' until local people arrived to help," he told journalists.

"The next morning I was informed that my assailant had died," he said, adding that he knew Juhana, a minivan driver who worked on the Ciputat-Pondok Labu route and lived in Pondok Aren near Bintaro.

Supriyadi, who hails from Demak in Central Java, has been working as an ojek driver for about three years.

Juhana's body was taken to Cipto Mangunkusumo General Hospital for a postmortem examination. (ivy)
