Mother, kids, friends caught in drug orgy

JAKARTA (JP): A woman, her two adolescent children and two friends were arrested during a drug orgy in the woman's rented room at Gang Langgar in Taman Sari.

West Jakarta Police chief Lt. Col. Adjie Rustam Ramdja identified the woman as cake seller Upi, 36, her children Dewi, 16, and Dedi, 20, and their friends, 21-year-old Insar, alias Andri, and 23-year-old Stephen Kosasih.

"They were all caught at about 10 p.m. on Thursday, smoking shabu-shabu (crystal methamphetamine) and having sex," Adjie said at Taman Sari Police Station over the weekend.

"Their neighbors notified us about their activities."

Upi denied to reporters that she was taking drugs when the police arrived.

"I had just come home from selling cakes very near here when I saw my daughter and son smoking. I tried to stop them. Not long after, police came and thought I was involved, too."

Upi said she lived alone with her children after divorcing her husband nine years ago.

"Well, the landowner, he's a good man, he lets me and my children occupy the room for free."

Upi admitted that she sometimes took drugs brought by Andri to help her escape her troubles. She contradicted her earlier statement by saying she joined her children in taking the drugs on Thursday.

"Yes, I do enjoy them. They make me fly and forget for a time all of my problems, but I never meant for my children to follow me," she said.

"It was just this time ... when I saw them smoking, I felt like smoking, too."

Dewi, whose hair was sprayed with blue dye, said she dropped out of school last year due to lack of funds.

"I've only smoked shabu-shabu twice. I have no work. I usually help my mother with the cakes."

Dedi said he helped his mother by washing dishes. (ylt)
