Morning quake wakes Bandung

BANDUNG: Residents of Bandung looking forward to a lazy Sunday morning were awakened by an earthquake measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale.

The local Meteorology and Geophysics Agency said the 30-second earthquake jolted the city at 7:55 a.m.

According to the agency, the tremor could be felt in a number of West Java towns, including Sukabumi, Indramayu, Subang and Sumedang. Even parts of Jakarta were said to have felt the quake.

No immediate reports of casualties or damage was reported in Bandung.

The epicenter of the quake was believed to be somewhere along the northern coast of West Java, or east of Jakarta.

The head of the Bandung Institute of Technology, Nanang T. Puspito, said the tremor was caused by a movement at the subduction zone, pushing the Indo-Australian continental shelf against the Eurasian shelf.

Bandung was shaken by an earthquake measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale in July.(25/lup)
