More women drivers to be recruited

JAKARTA: Head of the TransJakarta management Irzal Djamal said that 30 percent of buses running along busway corridors would be manned by women drivers.

"It is part of our service improvement. Busway passengers will be more comfortable because they are expected to be more gentle in driving," Irzal said on Wednesday.

But he said the recruitment of women drivers would be carried out in stages.

In accordance with the commemoration of Kartini Day on April 21, TransJakarta introduced 12 women drivers, three of whom are already driving along the Blok M-Kota busway corridor in the mornings, while nine others are still being trained.

Currently TransJakarta operates 60 buses along the corridor.

It plans to operate some 200 other buses on two other corridors -- from Pulogadung in East Jakarta to Harmony and Harmony to Kali Deres in West Jakarta. --JP
