More street lamps to be put up

JAKARTA (JP): The Municipal Lighting Office has installed 72,000 street lamps and is planning to put up 50,000 more by the year 2005, bringing the total to 122,000 street lamps.

"For the time being the placement of street lamps is limited to main roads due to the limited fund we have," the lighting office's chief Nazie Gani said on Monday.

Nazie said at present, his office aims to install 7,000 lamps, due to be completed by the end of next year. He said 5,000 of the total will illuminate streets in residential areas.

Asked about his office's preparations for Christmas and the New Year, Nazie said his office will repair street lamps which are out of order,Antara reported.

"We will not install new lamps, but we will place decorative lamps at the City Hall compound," Nazie said. (bas)
