More raids threaten street vendors

JAKARTA: The Central Jakarta Municipal Council said on Monday it would relocate street vendors in Pasar Senen, Kemayoran, Gunung Sahari, Tanah Abang and others in the vicinity of the National Monument (Monas) park in the near future.

"The presence of vendors in Senen and other areas is in violation of Bylaw No. 11/1988 on public order, and has caused a chaotic situation from the Senen bus terminal to the Kramat theater," Central Jakarta Mayor Hosea Petra Lumbun told beritajakarta.com.

He said such a situation would incite social unrest and crime, which were already on the rise in the city.

"Central Jakarta, which is the country's center of business and administration, must be free from such trashy sights," Lumbun said.

However, the mayor did not set a date for the planned raids. --JP
