More people less champions

There is no doubt that the Sydney Olympics is one of the greatest shows of friendly competition and competitive entertainment on earth, where our tears of joy or anguish can flow freely.

I had a chance to visit Sydney to witness nations competing for honor in the highest physical achievements, in the name of sporting glory and sportsmanship. But I decided to see as much of the competition as possible via television and stayed home.

From the medal tally, Indonesia has responded rather well to the general expectation as it has won more medals than some more advanced nations. But personally I am disappointed at the dismal results in athletics and archery. With its huge population, Indonesia should produce more champions. After all, Indonesians can run faster, jump higher and snatch more successfully than anyone else -- provided the police are chasing after them.
