More GAM prisoners to be moved

JAKARTA: The government will transfer another batch of convicted Aceh rebels to prisons outside the province, including in Kalimantan and East Nusa Tenggara.

"We want our brothers from Aceh to get along with other prisoners across the country that realize they are brothers of a nation and a country," Mardjaman, the new director general of penitentiaries, said on Wednesday.

Some 400 convicted Free Aceh Movement (GAM) rebels have been transferred to prisons across Java.

"We are currently examining the suitability of penitentiaries in other provinces outside Java, particularly regarding their capacity," Mardjaman said. -- JP
