More critical land found in Aceh

BANDA ACEH, Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam: Critical land within the conservation forest in Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam has reached 1.4 million hectares from the total forest area of 3.3 million hectares.

The destruction was a result of forest mismanagement, said executive director of Aceh's Indonesian Forum for the Environment (Walhi) Muhammad Ibrahim on Wednesday.

The critical land will make the forest more prone to landslides and floods, he said.

He said that the provincial administrative had continued to issue forest concessions which would cause the loss of 70,000 cubic meters of wood annually.

Ibrahim called on the government to pay more attention to the matter as President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono had announced his commitment to fighting illegal logging. --Antara
