Month-long party to mark anniversary

Jakarta has undergone many transformations and borne many names: Sunda Kelapa, Jayakarta, Batavia and Jacatra. The anniversary of the establishment of the city is officially celebrated on June 22. This year, to mark its 477th anniversary, the Jakarta administration has prepared a month-long festival.

Upcoming events:

June 14-July 14: Jakarta Great Sale 2004
Location: Department stores, malls, retail centers, hotels and restaurants across the capital.

This annual event aims to attract shoppers with discounts and special offers.

The opening ceremony will be held on June 24 at Plaza Semanggi on Jl. Sudirman with 24 department stores, 21 malls, 170 retailers and 18 hotels and restaurants participating in the program.

June 15-26: Jakarta Anniversary Arts Festival
Location: Jakarta Arts Building (GKJ), Pasar Baru, Central Jakarta

The CKJ will host various events, including performances and recitals.

June 17-July 18: Jakarta Fair 2004
Location: Kemayoran Fairground in Kemayoran, Central Jakarta.

An annual event since 1962, the fair will feature various events, including concerts, as well as a food festival and trade exhibitions.

June 20: Indonesia Interculture Festival (from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m.)
Location: Jl. Kebon Sirih in Central Jakarta

The festival will feature traditional and contemporary music and dance performances. Arts workshops and shows, including a program titled "Jakarta Rhythm of Percussion," will be held at the same location.

June 20: Jakarta International 10-K (from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m.)
Location: Monas, Jl. Thamrin, Jl. Sudirman

Professional athletes are expected to run, including 28 foreigners and 20 Indonesians, as well as thousands of amateurs. The event is open to the public.

June 26: Youth Night and Fireworks Festival
Location: Karnaval beach in Ancol Dreamland Park, North Jakarta Live music and a fireworks display.

June 27: Jakarta Street Carnival
Route: Sudirman-Thamrin-National Monument Park

Will feature a motorcade, including floats, and a Balinese kecak dance performance.
