Monopoly watch to examine busway

JAKARTA: The Business Competition Supervisory Commission (KPPU) will scrutinize the possible monopoly in the management of busway, which is currently in the hands of BP Transjakarta Busway.

"We have learned that the busway is managed by one company... other (bus operators) cannot use the existing busway corridor, many have lost jobs, passengers, and their routes," KPPU chairman Sutrisno Iwantono said on Wednesday.

He said the commission would collect information about the company from many parties before questioning the city officials and the company's representatives on the busway management.

"If we uncover a monopoly, the company that manages the busway may lose the project as stipulated by the 1999 antimonopoly law," Sutrisno added.

The busway system runs through the most lucrative line from Blok M bus terminal in South Jakarta to Kota railway station in West Jakarta. -- Antara
