Monitoring team deports Korean worker

Multa Fidrus, The Jakarta Post, Tangerang

Two weeks after its establishment, the Coordinating Team for Monitoring and Supervising Foreign Workers in Tangerang regency deported a South Korean citizen who did not possess the necessary documents.

Team chairman Kabul Priyono announced on Tuesday that Choi Young-sim, a 37-year-old Korean woman working at PT KKS in the regency, was deported on Friday.

"She did not have any of the documents required for a foreign worker. We already warned the company, too," he said. "Violators were warned and given time to complete all the required documents regarding their status as foreign workers here."

Kabul, who is also the regency immigration office head, said the team would take tough action against foreign workers who ignored its warnings and did not acquire the necessary documents.

So far, he said, the team had uncovered only minor violations by foreigners and the companies that employed them.

The team comprises officers from the regency immigration office, manpower agency, statistics agency, tourism agency, public order agency, the regional investment coordinating board, the police and the regional military command.

It is divided into two groups. Group A monitors foreign workers at industrial firms in Pasar Kemis district, while group B monitors foreigners in Balaraja district.

The team's group A has warned three Koreans at PT Bosung Indonesia in Pasar Kemis to extend their work permits, which have expired.

Similar warnings have been issued to foreign workers employed by PT Nasa, a Nike shoe producer, also in Pasar Kemis.

Group A leader Syarifuddin Umar said the team had yet to find any serious violations. "If we find any serious violations, we will just deport the violators ...."
