Model tried for drugs possession

JAKARTA: The trial of 32-year-old transsexual videoclip model, Jeanny Stavia -- popularly known as Avi and whose real name is Joko Wiriatno Suwito -- opened on Wednesday on charges of possessing 3.9 grams of marijuana.

The prosecution accused Avi of violating Article 78 of Law No. 05/1997 on narcotics, which carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison.

"It has been convincingly proven that on Sept. 19, 2003, the defendant purchased marijuana for Rp 15,000 for personal consumption," prosecutor Agnes Triyani told the courtroom.

Yanuar, alias Ian, a go-between who made the purchase for Avi, was also tried on Wednesday.

Avi, who shot to fame with a cameo in a music video for retro band Naif, entered the courtroom -- which was packed with TV gossip show reporters -- in traditional clothes designed by local designer Adjie Notonegorowith, flashing a smile.

The defendant's mother, Marina, told reporters that Avi had gained weight in detention.

"She has nothing to lose, and I am sure she will be acquitted of all charges," she said.

The trial has been adjourned until Jan. 19, when the defense will be heard. -- JP
