Mochtar elected UN law envoy
JAKARTA: Former Minister of Foreign Affairs Mochtar Kusumaatmadja was Monday elected a member of the International Law Commission for a five-year term beginning on January 1, 1997.
Mochtar is one of the 34 members elected to the commission, established by the Assembly in 1947 to promote the progressive development of international law and its codification.
The United Nations Information Center said that its 34 members are nominated by member states but serve in their individual capacities, not as representatives of their government.
The United Nations General Assembly resolution stipulates that the Commission should be composed of eight nationals from African states, seven from Asian states, three from Eastern European states, six from Latin American states, and eight from Western European and other states. (14)
