Mob destroys radio tower
PEMALANG, Central Java: More than 100 angry people destroyed a radio tower Sunday they suspected was used to spy on residents, police said yesterday.
Pemalang police chief Lt. Col. Sangadi told The Jakarta Post the residents were fooled by a rumormonger that the tower was used to monitor their activities.
"The 25-meter-high tower was used by the government for communications purposes and to promote development in the regency," Sangadi said.
The angry mob also vandalized electronic equipment, a power supply and a security post within the complex, he added.
Several people were detained for questioning and the authorities were trying to track down who spread the false rumors, he said. (har)
