Mob attack police station

CILACAP, Central Java: Police fired warning shots here on Thursday to disperse an angry mob which attacked a police station, a local police chief said.

Cilacap Police chief Supt. Bambang Sudarisman told The Jakarta Post by phone that the mob was demanding the police release a motorist detained at the police station.

The motorist, Gunadianto, 23, allegedly killed 20-year-old Turiman, a neighbor of the angry residents, on Wednesday night in a road accident, police said.

Bambang said that police had to fire warning shots as the mob were trying to drag Gunadianto out to take the law into their own hands.

He also said that at least one police vehicle and the station's front glass panel were damaged.

There were no reports of injuries or arrests following the attack. (45)
