JAKARTA (JP): Indonesian women's spikers gained mixed results in the opening day of the World Beach Volleyball qualifying round in Denpasar, Bali yesterday.

The Indonesia IV team, comprising Susilowati and Yohana, got off to a flying start with a 15-5 win over Australia V in the morning session, but crashed 3-15 to Brazil in the second match. Another Indonesian pair, Sri Kunafah and Agustina, smashed their way to their first win by beating the South African team of Ashfort and Burgesmeir 15-9.

The two-day event is the 16th leg of the 18-leg qualifying series for the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta. Only the top six teams, which are playing in Denpasar, will join another 18 squads in the main draw.
