Minivan drivers demand tariff hike

ANGERANG (JP): Hundreds of angkot (public minivan) drivers staged a rally at the city council building here on Thursday demanding a raise in the minivan tariff.

The protesters who drove their vehicles to the compound said that the tariff hike was appropriate following the recent raise in fuel prices by an average of 12 percent.

Representatives of the drivers, who met with several city councillors and an executive of the local land transportation control agency Erlan Suherman, demanded a raise of Rp 100 for short distance routes and Rp 200 for long distance routes.

City councillors promised the drivers they would fight for their demands to be realized.

Since the new fuel prices became effective on Oct. 1, many public minivans drivers have already raised their tariff between Rp 100 and Rp 200. (41/jaw)
