Minister refuses party top post
JAKARTA: State Minister of Administrative Reforms Taufik
Effendi said on Monday he had no intention of vying for the
Democratic Party's top post, saying he is focusing on his state
job.
"I think managing the party requires special attention. It's
better to give the job to a full-timer," he said when asked about
the party congress later this month.
Taufik is a member of the Democratic Party, which President
Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono co-founded last year. Susilo's wife,
Kristiani Herawati, is one of the party's deputy chairpersons.
The upstart Democratic Party won 7 percent of House of
Representatives seats in the legislative election last year. --

KPK to verify wealth reports
JAKARTA: The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) is
expected to start on Tuesday the actual verification of wealth
reports submitted by state officials.
As of Monday, Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and
Security Affairs Widodo Adi Sucipto, Minister of Foreign Affairs
Hassan Wirayuda, Minister of Manpower and Transmigration Fahmi
Idris and Attorney General Abdul Rahman Saleh are the only
members of the 35-strong United Indonesia Cabinet who have not
declared their wealth.
M. Jasin, the director of the commission's wealth report
division said on Monday the antigraft body would probe sources of
the officials' wealth during the verification.
The KPK has publicly announced the wealth of 300 councillors
from East Java, West Nusa Tenggara and Central Java. -- Antara

JAKARTA: House of Representatives Commission II budget
committee has approved only Rp 146.32 billion (US$15.8 million)
out of the Rp 1.03 trillion regional elections supporting budget
proposed by the home ministry.
A source on the committee said the government had included
many unnecessary items in its proposal, particularly for security
and legal affairs, which was allocated a whopping Rp 854.2
billion.
He said the government did not have to buy new equipment and
renew the data base of voters, but reuse the ones left over from
the legislative and presidential elections last year.
The government had earlier proposed a Rp 1.25 trillion budget
for the execution of the elections.
The commission and the home ministry are scheduled to resume
talks in a closed-door meeting on Tuesday. -- JP

West Sumatra gets acting governor
JAKARTA; Minister of Home Affairs Mohammad Ma'ruf installed on
Monday his aide, Muhammad Thamrin, as West Sumatra acting
governor, replacing Zainal Bakar who ended his five-year term on
Feb. 24, 2005.
The installment ceremony for Thamrin, an expert staff member
for political and legal affairs at the ministry, took place in
Ma'ruf's office in Jakarta.
Thamrin was appointed based on Presidential Decree No.
25/M/2005 issued on March 7 on the replacement of Zainal Bakar.
Ma'ruf said the installment of Thamrin was to ensure the first
direct gubernatorial election in West Sumatra scheduled for June
proceeded smoothly.
Zainal reportedly plans to contest the election for another
five-year term under the United Development Party (PPP).
However, he declined to comment on the report on Monday. "Wait
