Military to regreen Kalimantan

SAMARINDA, East Kalimantan: In observance of the Indonesian Military's 56th anniversary, Tanjungpura Military Command, which oversees Kalimantan will launch a one-million-tree environmental program to regreen deforested areas of the province.

Maj. Gen. Hadi Waluyo, chief of the military command, said here on Thursday that the launching of the regreening program would be marked with the planting of 35,000 durian and rambutan trees in the village of Bengkuring, near the city, on Friday.

He said the local military would give priority to the regreening program in areas that were close to residential areas because a similar program in remote deforested areas had already been entrusted to companies holding forest concessionaires.

He said the local military were carrying out the regreening program to show its commitment to preserving the environment in the region. --Antara
