Military, students hold dialog

JAKARTA (JP): A dialog between the military and students was held at City Military Chief. Maj. Gen. Sutiyoso's residence on Jl. Teuku Umar, Central Jakarta, Wednesday.

Lt. Col. Didi Supandi, the City Military Command spokesman, said yesterday both parties considered the dialog useful.

The students, represented by student councils from most private and state tertiary institutions, told Sutiyoso what they thought Jakarta's "irregularities" were.

Sutiyoso, referring to recent university student brawls, told students to refrain from conduct damaging their reputations as centers of excellence.

"I am very happy to have had the opportunity to talk with the students," Sutiyoso said.

In an effort to create a "better climate" in Jakarta, Sutiyoso has held informal meetings with all layers of society and professional organizations, including ulemas, journalists and artists. (sur)
