Military says police uncontrollable

JAKARTA: The National Police should not be under the supervision of the president but should be under the minister of home affairs or the attorney general, a former high ranking military officer said on Friday.

Former Military Police chief May. Gen. (ret.) Syamsu Djalal said the current structure had made the police often uncontrollable and had thus created various irregularities.

"Only in Indonesia, police are put under the president. In other countries, it is under the minister of home affairs or the Attorney General's Office," he told reporters.

He also said that the police in provinces and regencies should be put under the control of local administrations, which also oversee local security issues.-Antara
