Migrant workers seek justice

PONTIANAK, West Kalimantan: Five migrant workers, representing 180 of their colleagues, met Malaysian envoy Ismail Haji Salam on Monday here, demanding settlement to a labor dispute with a Malaysian plywood company WTK Linshanhao.

The dispute was sparked by the dismissal of six Indonesian migrant workers by the company several months ago, which prompted their compatriots in the company to stage a strike in a show of solidarity.

At the meeting, the workers demanded that their colleagues be reemployed and their daily allowance, which was deducted due to the strike, be repaid.

They also urged the company to adopt a fair remuneration system, which does not differentiate between married from single workers.

In response to the protest, Ismail said that his consulate would convey the message to the company, which is based in Kuching, Malaysia. -- Antara
