Migrant case puts govt in hot seat

MATARAM, West Nusa Tenggara: The central government should do all it can to save an Indonesian migrant worker from the death penalty in Malaysia, says West Nusa Tenggara deputy governor Thamrin Rayes.

Adi bin Asnawi, 25, a migrant worker from Kuripan subdistrict in the province, is being tried for allegedly murdering his Malaysian employer in 1996.

Indonesian non-governmental organization Migrant CARE has expressed disappointment with the government for not intervening in Adi's case.

In a statement sent to the media on Tuesday, the NGO demanded that the government act immediately to save Adi's life.

The NGO also demanded that the government reprimand Indonesian Embassy officials in Malaysia for neglecting Asnawi's case. -- JP
