MF Siregar to receive honorary doctorate

JAKARTA: Sports expert MF Siregar will receive an honorary doctorate from Universitas Negeri Jakarta (UNJ).

The presentation ceremony will take place on Wednesday at the UNJ campus in Rawamangun, East Jakarta.

"I am surprised that an old person like me will receive an honorary doctorate. It is an honor for me," the 76-year-old Siregar said.

Siregar began his sports career as a runner before switching to swimming. He became a swimming coach in 1950 and served as the chairman of the Indonesian Swimming Association from 1980 to 1986. He was also the secretary-general of the National Sports Council in 1971.

He later focused his energies on badminton and his current position is secretary-general of the Indonesian Badminton Association. --JP
