Menteng Stadium to become a park

JAKARTA: The Jakarta Park Agency announced on Tuesday a plan to turn Menteng Stadium in Central Jakarta into a public park.

The stadium, which was previously used by the Jakarta Soccer Club (Persija) as its headquarters, will provide Jakartans with sports and recreational facilities.

The facility which will be created on 3.4 hectares of land, the construction of which is expected to start next year, will include a jogging track, cafe, art gallery and spacious parking lot.

Persija will move to Lebak Bulus Stadium in South Jakarta.

The site on Jl. HOS Cokroaminoto will be an addition to the two existing parks in Menteng, Suropati and Situ Lembang parks.

The agency head Sarwo Handayani said that the blueprint of the building was still in process. The agency had held a contest for the design and already have a winner. -- JP
