Meisya wins karate gold

JAKARTA (JP): An Indonesian female karate competitor, Meisya,
managed to grab the gold medal in the women's under-50 kilograms
division at the eighth International Karate Championships in
Venice, Italy, on Dec. 9 and Dec. 10.

In the men's competition, Nurfan, took the bronze in the 60kgs
division at the event. Two other fighters of Wawang Nur Rasyid
and Ela Komariah failed to bring home any medals.

Team manager Darwan Siregar said in a fax release sent by the
Indonesian Embassy in Rome that the participation in the
championships was to groom younger athletes to improve their
performance at larger events in the future. (yan)
