Megawati breaches campaign rules: KPUD

JAKARTA: The Central Jakarta General Elections Commission (KPUD) has accused presidential candidate Megawati Soekarnoputri of violating campaign rules by holding an unscheduled campaign event on Sunday.

About 500 supporters of Megawati, who is the incumbent President, grouped in the Mega-Hasyim Betawi Center, visited the Karet Bivak cemetery in Central Jakarta along with Megawati's husband Taufik Kiemas and legislator Soetardjo Soeryogoeritno.

KPUD monitoring team member Haris Sumantri said the event was in violation of campaign rules because there were calls to vote for a certain presidential candidate during the visit to the cemetery, while Megawati was not scheduled to campaign in Jakarta on Sunday.

Pro-Megawati banners and posters were also carried by people taking part in the event, he added. -- Antara
