Megaproject

I'd like to comment on the letter Mamberamo project by Mr.
Dominggus Mompioper (April 19, 1997).

My attention was first aroused when Mr. Dominggus quoted
Minister of Research and Technology B.J. Habibie's statement that
the main stay area is the area which the province is trying to
develop within a short time period, within certain limits
(Kompas, April 14, 1997).

I also agree with Mr. Dominggus' point of view, which
basically asked the government to give more consideration before
further legalizing any more megaprojects such as Mamberamo.

There should be social and cultural studies before venturing
into a huge project, because it will directly affect local
communities. I wonder whether the government would train the
local community living near Mamberamo so that they can be part of
the megaproject, rather than just be spectators.
